What is a yard management system (YMS)?

A yard management system (YMS) is software that tracks every trailer inside a warehouse yard — where it is, what's on it, and who's moving it. A YMS handles in-yard moves, gate check-in, and trailer pool management. Dock scheduling, by contrast, focuses on booking the dock-door appointment.

What a YMS handles

A YMS tracks trailer location across the yard — gate, parking, dock, return — using check-in events, RFID, GPS, or operator updates. Yard jockeys get move tasks. Gate guards check trailers in and out. Compliance teams get audit trails.

How YMS and dock scheduling differ

Dock scheduling answers: 'who has door 4 at 10am?' YMS answers: 'where is trailer ABC-1234 right now?' Many warehouses run both. Smaller and mid-size operations often start with dock scheduling alone — it solves the loudest pain first.

When you actually need a YMS

If you have a large yard, multiple shifts of yard jockeys, drop-trailer pools, and frequent in-yard moves, a YMS pays for itself fast. If your yard is small enough that you can see every trailer from the office window, dock scheduling alone is usually enough.
