Dock scheduling is the practice of giving every inbound or outbound truck a specific arrival window at a warehouse or distribution center, so doors aren't double-booked, drivers don't queue, and warehouse teams can plan labor around predictable arrivals.

Why warehouses use dock scheduling

Without dock scheduling, trucks arrive whenever they arrive. Receivers play traffic cop. Carriers wait, drivers run out of hours, and the operation absorbs the cost. With dock scheduling, every trailer has a confirmed window — usually a 30-minute, 60-minute, or 2-hour slot — at a specific door, captured in a single source of truth.

How a dock-scheduling system works

No. A yard management system (YMS) tracks trailers and moves inside the yard. Dock scheduling specifically books appointments at the dock door. The two often work together but solve different problems.
Do I need dock scheduling for a small warehouse?
If you take more than five trucks a day, yes. The phone-and-spreadsheet approach scales poorly above that volume.
