Live load vs drop trailer: what's the difference?

On a live load, the driver stays with the truck while the trailer is loaded or unloaded — typically 30 to 90 minutes. On a drop-and-hook (drop trailer), the driver drops a pre-loaded trailer and picks up another, taking 15 minutes or less. The choice affects dwell time, dock-door utilization, detention exposure, and how you should configure dock-scheduling appointment types.

Live loads

Live loads are simpler logistically — one driver, one truck, in and out. They work well when volume is moderate and the warehouse can guarantee a fast turn. The downside is detention exposure: if the dock can't load fast enough, the carrier bills detention.

Drop trailers

Drop trailers decouple driver time from loading time. Carriers leave a pre-loaded trailer at a yard slot and pick up a different empty (or pre-loaded outbound). This shrinks driver dwell to almost nothing but requires trailer-pool capacity, more yard space, and tight inventory tracking.

Scheduling implications

Configure live-load appointment types with the actual loading duration and minimum notice. For drop trailers, configure short check-in slots (10–15 minutes) and use custom fields to capture trailer numbers in and out. SimpleDock supports both with separate appointment types per facility.

Which is cheaper, live load or drop trailer?
Per-load, live is usually cheaper because you're not paying for trailer-pool capacity. Across a full operation, drop trailers can lower total cost by reducing detention and improving driver utilization.
Can the same dock handle both?

What's a 'preloaded outbound'?
A trailer the warehouse loads in advance so a driver can hook and leave without waiting at the dock door — essentially the outbound side of a drop-trailer program.
