What is a dock appointment?

A dock appointment is a confirmed time window during which a specific truck is allowed to use a specific dock door at a warehouse or distribution center. It usually includes the load type, expected duration, and contact info for the carrier and driver.

What's captured on a dock appointment

A dock appointment typically includes the carrier or company name, contact email and phone, driver name and phone, expected trailer or PRO number, PO or shipment reference, the appointment type (live load, drop, pickup), and the assigned door. Many warehouses also capture custom required fields like temperature, lot code, or seal number.

How dock appointments are created

Modern dock-scheduling tools let carriers create their own appointments through a shared booking link. The carrier picks an appointment type, sees only available slots, fills in the required info, and confirms. The warehouse is notified instantly and the appointment is locked in.

What happens after the appointment is booked

The carrier gets a confirmation with a manage-link they can use to reschedule or cancel. The driver gets SMS reminders before arrival. The warehouse team sees the appointment on the daily schedule and can prep the door, pull the right paperwork, and assign labor.

How long is a typical dock appointment?
Live loads are usually 30–90 minutes. Drop-and-hook trailers are typically 15 minutes or less. Drop trailers can be open-ended.
Can a single appointment cover multiple POs?
Yes. Most dock-scheduling tools let you capture multiple PO references on one appointment — useful for consolidated shipments.
What happens if the truck is late?
Pre-arrival check-in flows let drivers signal they're running late, and the warehouse can decide whether to hold the slot, push it, or cancel.
