What is an appointment SLA?

An appointment SLA is a service-level agreement between a warehouse and its carriers (or vendors) covering how dock appointments are booked, attended, and completed — minimum notice, on-time arrival window, accepted reschedule lead time, and dock-turn time. Dock-scheduling tools enforce SLAs by encoding them as configuration: minimum-notice rules, slot durations, buffer times, and approval gates.

What goes into an appointment SLA

Typical SLA elements: minimum notice required to book (e.g., 4 hours, 24 hours), the acceptable on-time window (e.g., +/- 15 minutes), reschedule lead time (e.g., must reschedule at least 2 hours before), maximum dwell time the warehouse will allow before flagging detention, and consequences for late or no-show appointments.

Why warehouses set them

Without an SLA, every carrier negotiates the rules in real time. With an SLA, the rules are encoded once and the booking system enforces them automatically. That removes friction for both sides and produces clean data for compliance reviews.

How SimpleDock enforces SLA rules

Per-appointment-type configuration: minimum notice in minutes, buffer time before and after, slot duration, slots per hour, and optional approval gate. Carriers can't book outside the SLA, and the warehouse has a clean audit trail when something is rebooked, late, or rejected.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dock-appointment SLA a contract?
It can be — many vendor-compliance manuals contain explicit dock SLAs. The dock-scheduling tool's job is to enforce whatever SLA you've agreed to.
How is an SLA different from a vendor compliance program?
Vendor compliance is the broader policy (labelling, packaging, ASN timing). The dock-appointment SLA is the dock-door subset of that.
Can different carriers have different SLAs?
Indirectly. Use different appointment types for different SLA tiers — different notice windows, durations, and approval rules — and direct the right carriers to the right type.
